Emergency hearing in days and I still do not understand what evidence matters

this legal stuff is confusing af and i keep panicking this child custody situation keeps changing and i am struggling to keep up with what matters legally. there are conflicting msgs from the other side and i cannot tell what is a threat versus what is actually enforceable. i am trying to protect my safety and my future w/out escalating things further. i have kids in the middle of this and i am trying not to create more instability. pls give me 2-3 steps i can do today

A one-page timeline plus key documents can make your first lawyer meeting much more useful.. Hope that gives you a clear next step.

You are not alone in this. Start by writing a timeline and gathering every document in one folder. That will make any lawyer consult much more productive. Try to stay factual in texts, even if the other side escalates.

Attorney here. General information only: I would prep a one-page summary before any consult: timeline, goals, biggest risk, and what result you can live with. General information only; local counsel should adapt this to your facts.

You are asking the right question. i would prep a one-page summary before any consult: timeline, goals, biggest risk, and what result you can live with.

Use a structured approach: objective timeline, evidence index, and issue-by-issue risk assessment.. tbh that approach minimizes avoidable mistakes.. Ask for plain-language explanations in consults and write them down.

Try to separate what feels urgent from what is legally urgent. That distinction saved me a lot of chaos. Do not rely on memory. Write notes right after calls.

i would prep a one-page summary b4 any consult timeline goals biggest risk and what result u can live with. bring exact dates and amounts whenever possible.

for court credibility keep statements factual and specific dates amounts and direct quotes where possible. also keep every deadline in one calendar so nothing slips.

dont panic sign anything fast. tbh ask questions first and write it down. if safety is an issue ask about emergency options immediately.

if money is tight ask local legal aid and also call the clerk for procedure-only questions. they cannot give legal advice but can clarify filing mechanics. if safety is an issue ask about emergency options immediately.

Great system, right. Anyway: general information only: maintain factual consistency across filings and communications.
